Case Studies and Achievements

The case studies below give a flavour of my professional expertise as a registered and fully qualified UK Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) accountant.

Case Study – Reporting and Funding

Background

A £20m food company was changing its Head of Finance but also needed additional funding for growth. I was given free rein to make any improvements necessary.

How I Helped

  • Re-wrote year-end projections.
  • Revamped the Board’s monthly management accounts pack.
  • Resolved the reasons the banks weren’t granting additional borrowing facilities.

Result

An additional £700k facility was granted by one bank and a hibernated facility of £1.2m was reinstigated by the second.

Case Study – Strategy

Background

A £100m+ plc required all subsidiaries to produce a 5-year plan for the first time. The directors of one subsidiary (T/O £35m) were the main business income generators. They didn’t want to do so because they were concerned the company’s performance would suffer.

How I Helped

  • Organised working lunches to brainstorm a vision for the future.
  • Produced a 5-year finance strategy with a set of financial assumptions.
  • Developed and presented the strategy, with the subsidiary, to the Board.

Result

The plan was fully accepted by the Group Board without changes. Within 6 months, it was used to sell the subsidiary.

Case Study – IT Change Management

Background

The owner of a Mortgage Brokerage was anxious because his weekly cash flow forecasts were unreliable.

How I Helped

  • I recommended operational changes to key systems were kept up to date.
  • I created accurate weekly forecasts by developing an Excel spreadsheet that combined:
    • An analysis of weekly cash movements
    • Operational data feeds.

Result:

The owner says, he can “now sleep at night”.

Case Study – Cash Flow Issues

Background

A retail business with three outlets appeared to prosper – but it was having cash flow problems. The MD believed this was caused by fraud.

How I Helped

  • Identified the cause of the cash flow problem was overstocking due to low stock turnover then:
    • Developed a staff rotation model to optimise manning levels.
    • Improved the cash security protocols.
  • Ran a sale to turn the problem stock into cash.
  • Introduced better controls to prevent a repeat of the problem.

Result

The company has expanded to 6 outlets.

Case Study – Forensic Divorce Accountant

I was a “professional expert” in a divorce case, acting for the wife’s solicitor.

How I Helped

  • Created multiple reconcilable Excel databases of all transactions across 22 accounts.
  • Analysed and summarised how each account had been utilised.
  • Provided further data analysis when requested by the legal team

Result

The court denied all legal claims by the ex-husband. The wife received her full share from the sale of the family home.

Case Study – Bank Loan

Background

A company’s £30m+ loan facility was up for renewal but their commercial bank was concerned.

How I Helped

  • Investigated the financial status of the business using:
    • Filed statutory records
    • The monthly re-forecasts sent by the Finance Director to the bank.
  • My findings were added to the report supplied to the bank.

Result:

The bank renewed the facility.

Case Study – Strategy Planning/Funding Consultant

Background

An IT company needed to raise £600k to fund the development of a new Police system.

How I Helped

  • Developed a 5-year projection and integrated it into the overall business memorandum of information.
  • Presented the business to various interested investors.
  • Managed the Investor Due Diligence responses on the financials.

Result

The 600k was secured – with a further promise of additional funds if required.

Case Study – Funding

Background

£500k funding was required for a potential business purchase

How I Helped

  • Conducted an examination of the company’s financial performance over the previous 4 years.
  • Developed a 5-year projection for both P&L and Balance Sheet to secure investment and provide the new owners with a vision of the future potential.
  • Resolved questions arising out of the due diligence process.

Result

Full funding was secured for the purchase of the business.
